Forbidden Fruit?

After Nana finished trimming our overgrown Passion Flower vine last week, I noticed this unripe fruit on the ground. According to what I've read, ripe fruit from these plants are both edible raw, as well as being processed to some other state.
Nana, on the other hand, informs me that her experience as a young girl with native Passion Flower fruit reveals a core emitting noxious odors ("We used to stomp on them", she says).
