AT LEAST HE COULDN'T FLY

I recall when we posted this photo we took at the Florida Natural History Museum of a fossil replica of an extinct (thank goodness for meteors!) "Terror Bird".
Last week, I ran across an image from a foreign museum of this bird imagined as he might have looked in real life. Up to 10' in height with a top speed in the 30 mph range, a human encounter would have been brief, painful and ultimately fatal (once again, extinct, right?)

And I thought the sandhill cranes were back with their beaks!
