Built for industrialist Charles Austin Buck in 1930, El Retiro (Spanish for retreat) was enjoyed by Buck's family for many years.
Lucy Buck's (a daughter) bedroom is pictured above. The vaulted ceiling - with no joists - is supported by tie rods w/ turnbuckles to prevent the walls and tile roof from collapsing on poor Lucy - working just like the tie rod in the bottom photo on a louvered closet door in our house.

Brownbird - Throwback Thursday
The tie rod system worked - Lucy lived to the age of 94, with three daughters, 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren!
