...A DEADLY ENCOUNTER

On the night of February 17, 1864 the H. L. Hunley embarked on a dangerous mission that would forever mark her place in history.
Eight men entered the experimental vessel that was to become the first successful submarine in world history to sink an enemy warship, the USS Housatonic, in combat. Minutes after her historic achievement, the Hunley and all hands on board vanished into the sea without a trace.
136 years later, the intact submarine was raised from the ocean floor and brought to the Warren Lasch Conservation Center to be studied and observed.
In the 3rd photo down, the Hunley rests in a cradle when it was first brought to the lab. The next to dark stereo photos show the center section and prop area as the craft endures a special chemical bath.
A model at the Conservation Center and a full-scale replica at the South Carolina State Museum complete the photo collection.
