Uh, Back To The Workshop, Fellas...



Meet the USS Galena, above, an experimental ironclad warship, pictured here in 1862 during the Civil War. The fancy lap joint sides proved to be a little too lightweight to do their job of bouncing off Confederate cannonballs - the inset enlargement in the bottom photo reveals a giant...well, cork, plugging a hole near the waterline. Next to it, even closer to the waterline, a Confederate cannonball is embedded in the side of the ship.
