H.L. Hunley

On the evening of February 17, 1864, the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley slipped out to sea and attacked the U.S. Sloop of War U.S.S. Housatonic (2nd photo from bottom). The attack was successful, and the Housatonic sank within minutes. The Hunley also flooded and was lost with all crew. In the Spring of 1995, a survey team from NUMA (under the direction of noted author Clive Cussler) located the wreck of the Hunley, and on August 9, 2000 the little (39') submarine surfaced once again (bottom photo).

.

I've placed my completed Hunley model above the World War II Gato-class submarine model completed earlier for a size comparison - they're both executed in 72:1 scale.
