We have a Natural Gas pipeline a few blocks from our house, running North and South through our subdivision. The aircraft above, which I photographed a few days ago, was flying North, parallel to that line. Natural Gas lines in the lower 48 states are shown on the map.
Dozens of companies contract to patrol Natural Gas, oil and electrical lines throughout the U.S. Pilots typically fly below 500', following the lines, aided by marker posts like the example shown.
