SWEET STUFF

A few weeks ago, we visited the ruins of the Dunlawton Sugar Mill in Port Orange.
Here, in the first half of the 19th century, plantation owners and 25 full-time "employees" (slaves) attempted to turn sugar cane into a viable product. Shown above, four of the six kettles in the mill that reduced the raw syrup by heat, thickening it enough to pour into troughs for drying into crystals.
