Church Keys

When I popped open a bottle of German "Dunkel" (dark) beer yesterday, I realized that I was performing the task with the very last "Church Key" in my possession.
In their most recent form, above, they were manufactured beginning in the 1930's - designed to open the new flat-top beer cans (with the opposite end for bottles). Usually given away free and often with company advertising, they ended up opening everything from V-8 cans to motor oil. With the invention of self-opening cans and twist top bottle caps, their use declined.
European beers, however, don't have twist top caps - so there I sat on a Saturday afternoon, nursing a brew and waxing nostalgic.... =:o)
.
Brownbird - Macht nichts, I'll use something else to open them - February 19th
