Whenever I see the "ear" tree in my neighbor's yard extending it's branches over our fence (top photo) and dipping into our yard at head height, my blood pressure seems to go up about ten points. I've found that I may need to do some rethinking on this, however, as I've become aware of a few facts about these "invasive" trees.
To begin with, the Guanacaste tree, the National Tree of Costa Rica, is not considered an invasive species by the Florida Department of Agriculture. The natural range of these trees extends from southern Mexico through Central America to the northern edge of South America. Besides providing needed shade on pasture land, their lightweight wood is used in everything from canoes to paneling.
Who knew??
